the "bird room”

Bird Room Glassworks is named in honor of my grandma, who passed away in 2022. Her house was a constant gathering place for family and friends. After she passed, the simple joy of dropping by for a surprise visit or running into aunts, uncles & cousins around her kitchen table became a cherished memory instead of something I could always count on. That shift in life left a space in me that I wanted to fill with something meaningful. After years of wanting to learn stained glass, I finally signed up for a class and began collecting the tools I would need. While I probably would have started eventually, the timing felt just right.

An elderly woman with a big smile, wearing a floral dress and a sash that says 'it's my birthday!", sitting outdoors at a party.

I spent a lot of time thinking about a name for this venture of mine. I wanted a name that would evoke happiness and nostalgia. Her “bird room” was a sunny, plant-filled space with a view of the lake - a peaceful space where my friends and I would camp out after riding our bikes through town and renting VHS tapes from the local video store (proud millennial here!) She had various stained glass pieces and sun-catchers hanging in her windows that I always admired (secretly hoping she’d let me bring one home!) Thinking of that room brings me back to a time that felt fun & care-free, which made it the perfect inspiration for my studio’s name. The bold & colorful nature of birds also aligns seamlessly with the vibrant aesthetic of my art.

A Studio with Heart

My studio isn’t just where I make stained glass - it’s filled with little touches that mean something to me. I’ve added pieces that remind me of my grandma’s Bird Room, the cozy, sun-filled space that inspired the name of my business. I worked hard to create a space that’s both practical and cozy - one that brings me back to a simpler time when things moved slower and creativity came easy.

The pendant lights above my workbench are vintage glass finds with colorful crystals that I picked up while treasure hunting. A glass hummingbird, gifted by one of my best friends when I first started this adventure, hangs in the window. I even have the same bird clock my grandma had - the one that sings a different bird call every hour. I never got the chance to make her a special piece, but I like to think she’s watching over everything I create now - and I hope she’d feel right at home here. 💛

That’s my story, what’s yours?
